History of the Mississippi State University Class Ring

Developed in 1935 by the school administration, H. F. “Slim” Allen (for whom Allen Hall is named) and L. G. Balfour (then president of the L. G. Balfour Company), the official Mississippi State University class ring is embedded in rich tradition dating back to the origin of the University.

The top of the ring displays the University name and the date of its founding encircling a brilliant garnet (maroon) stone. The two star dividers recognize Mississippi State and the state of Mississippi's involvement in any armed conflicts through 1878.

One side of the ring displays the bulldog - in recognition of our mascot - emblazoned onto a shield representing defense of the University in both academics and athletics. This shield is positioned overlaying a saber and a rifle. The saber symbolizes General Stephen Dill Lee's and the State of Mississippi's participation and leadership role in prior military battles. The rifle is in remembrance of Mississippi State University students and alumni killed during armed conflicts while proudly defending our country. The eagle holding aloft the shield symbolizes the high ideals of the country, the state, and the university. This side also designates the student's degree. The American Bald Eagle with wings spread, holding a shield atop a crossed musket and saber - symbolic of the university's commitment to the protection of freedom and liberty - can be found on both sides of the official class ring.

The other side displays your graduation year above the face of General Stephen Dill Lee - the first president of Mississippi State University - also emblazoned onto a shield. Both muskets and sabers cross behind the shield and symbolize the University's military heritage.

Traditionally, the undergraduate at State proudly wears the ring with the words Mississippi State University facing inward. After graduation, the ring is turned around so that Mississippi State University faces outward symbolic of the fact that, with a diploma in hand, the newest alumnus is ready to face the world. The Mississippi State ring is distinctive and everyone will know that the owner is someone very special-a Mississippi State University graduate!

Class Ring Design

The mens' and ladies' design feature an antique finish and are available in 10kt, or 14 kt, white or yellow gold, and celestrium, a fine jewelers stainless.

The sides are personalized with your graduation year and degree letters and engraving is available on the inside of the ring.

An encrusting of MSU or Greek Letters may be placed on the smooth cut, synthetic garnet (maroon) stone that sits atop the ring.

Pin or Pendant Design

The Official pin/pendant, established in 2007 with input from currently enrolled students, features the seal of Mississippi State University and is surrounded by alternating garnets and cubic zirconias. As an option, diamonds are available in place of the cubic zirconias.

Class Ring, Pin or Pendant Eligibility

Undergraduate students are eligible to purchase the official class ring after completing 60 credit hours and graduate students must complete all degree requirements. Transfer students are eligible to purchase the official ring after completing 30 MSU hours. Alumni who have completed the undergraduate or graduate requirements are invited to purchase the official class ring.
