Mississippi State University

Talking Points

When you talk to potential students, what can you say about Mississippi State?
  • We offer a great education that is affordable. Mississippi State is recognized by Kiplinger magazine as one of the top 100 "best values" among the nation's public colleges and universities. The honor is reserved for universities that provide “top-flight academics at an affordable cost.”
  • We provide a wide range of studies for every interest. Among our fastest-growing majors are communication and kinesiology, but you can study subjects ranging from architecture to veterinary medicine. MSU offers more than 80 academic majors in eight colleges and schools.
  • We’re here to help you succeed from day one. Our freshman-year experience – including shared dining and residential opportunities – encourages engagement in the university community. It provides opportunities for first-year students to live, learn, and lead together. New programs include the Day One Program for incoming freshmen and the highly competitive Appalachian Leadership Honors Program, which provides student mentoring and service components.
  • MSU students develop skills that prepare them for jobs. Through our Career Center, more than 600 business representatives last year reviewed nearly 13,000 student resumes for potential employment. The cooperative education program, one of the biggest in the Southeast, regularly provides real-world work opportunities for students who wish to alternate employment with academic coursework. MSU’s professional golf management program is among several academic areas that traditionally have 100 percent job placement of graduates.
  • Our students can compete with those at any university. Students regularly bring home regional and national honors such as the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, a highly competitive award for those interested in public service. MSU is a Truman Scholarship Honor Institution. Engineering students were regional winners in design competitions for robots, concrete canoes and cyber defense systems. Business education, architecture, and forestry students earned top honors in national competition with their peers.
  • Our faculty are leaders in their fields. Many hold the rank of Fellow in their professional organizations, the highest honor awarded for career accomplishments. MSU faculty frequently earns honors such as Fulbright Fellowships, and two National Academy of Sciences members have joined the MSU faculty as distinguished research professors. They are Mississippi's only members of the National Academy of Sciences.
  • We’re committed to the safety of our students. A Crisis Action Team, which conducts regular drills, is prepared to respond quickly in the event of a campus-wide emergency. Safety measures for students include card-access residence halls, emergency call boxes located around campus, and police-provided campus escorts when requested, day or night.
