135th birthday party a success

Hundreds of Bulldog faithful enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day as it celebrated the 135th birthday of Mississippi State on Thursday, Feb. 28 in the Junction.

Hosted by the MSU Alumni Association, the annual event drew students, faculty, staff and alumni from the Starkville and surrounding communities. Guests were treated to complimentary hamburgers, soft drinks and MSU ice cream. Dining Services also donated a large birthday cake that was served to attendees.

"We could not have asked for a better day for this significant event," said Dr. Jimmy Abraham, associate vice president for development and alumni and executive director of the Alumni Association. "We had a terrific turn out and every one enjoyed visiting with friends and fellow Bulldogs to celebrate MSU’s 135th birthday."

Guests also enjoyed live entertainment by the local band Big Poppa Strang, which was sponsored by Music Maker Productions. Free T-shirts were thrown from the stage during the concert.

The Alumni Association began hosting the annual birthday party in 2006 to commemorate the founding of the university. Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College was established on February 28, 1878 by the state legislature. Now Mississippi State University, it is the largest higher education institution in the state with more than 20,300 students.
