Alumni representatives vote to make changes to constitution and bylaws

During the annual leadership conference, representatives from more than 60 chapters voted to make changes to the association constitution and bylaws. Members of an ad hoc committee of the national board of directors met with the executive committee in October to recommend extending the term of national president.

Under the previous bylaws, a new national president was elected each year, with the term beginning July 1. In order to provide stability to the office, the committee made a formal recommendation to extend the presidential term to two years. The committee also recommended eliminating the position of second vice president. In addition, the vice president and immediate past president would also serve two year terms.

The vote passed unanimously, and formal changes to the bylaws and constitution will take effect July 1, 2013, with the extended terms beginning July 1, 2014. With the new length of service, once the vice president is elected, he or she will remain a national officer for six years.

New versions of the constitution and bylaws will be made available online in the near future. If you have any comments or questions, please contact Camille Scales Young, 2012-13 national president at cyoung@cgagroup.com, or Dr. Jimmy Abraham, executive director at jabraham@alumni.msstate.edu.
