Constitution and bylaws changes proposed
The executive committee of the MSU Alumni Association, along with an ad hoc committee selected from members of the national board of directors, met in October to discuss the possibility of extending the term of the national president to two years. This group felt that this was a positive change for our leadership on the national level. If approved, it would give stability to this important office for two years.
In looking at this change, the committee recommended that the position of second vice president be eliminated. If approved, the president would serve a two-year term, as would the vice president and the immediate past president. When the vice president is elected, he or she would serve six years as a national officer, with two years each in the role of vice president, president and immediate past president. If we kept the second vice president’s position, the individual would serve an eight-year term as a national officer, which the committee felt was too long of a commitment for anyone to make.
These proposed revisions to the constitution and bylaws will be discussed and voted on during the annual business meeting at the leadership conference on Feb. 2, 2013. If approved, the documents will take effect on July 1, 2013, with these changes to be enacted with the 2014-15 elections. We will follow our current constitution and bylaws for officer elections for the 2013-14 term, which means we will elect a second vice president at our upcoming business meeting in accordance with our constitution and bylaws.
